"Man with sciatica receiving osteopathic treatment in Sheffield clinic"

Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by irritation or pressure on the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. This nerve runs from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. When compressed, it can lead to:

  • Sharp or burning pain in the lower back, buttock, or leg

  • Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” down the leg

  • Weakness or difficulty moving the affected leg or foot

  • Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing, or bending

Sciatica is an umbrella term for pain running down the back of the leg and is often linked to problems such as a slipped disc, spinal/disc degeneration, muscle tension, or posture issues.

The national institute for health and care excellence (NICE) suggest manual therapy (spinal manipulation, mobilisation or soft tissue techniques such as massage) for managing low back pain with or without sciatica.

Osteopathy takes a gentle, whole-body approach to treating sciatica. Treatment may include:

  • Relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve

  • Improving movement in the spine and pelvis

  • Releasing tight muscles in the lower back and hips

  • Supporting better posture to reduce strain on the spine

  • Providing advice on exercises and lifestyle changes to prevent flare-ups

Osteopathy doesn’t just target the symptoms, it helps address the underlying cause, supporting recovery and reducing the risk of sciatica returning.

  • In some cases, mild sciatica can improve over time. However, without addressing the underlying cause, symptoms may persist or return. Treatment can speed up recovery and reduce recurrence.

  • To support recovery:

    • Stay active with gentle movement

    • Avoid prolonged sitting

    • Follow prescribed exercises

    • Use heat or ice for pain relief

We provide custom exercise plans for patients to speed up recovery.

  • You should seek treatment if:

    • Pain lasts more than 1–2 weeks

    • Symptoms are worsening

    • You have numbness or weakness

    • Sciatica is affecting daily life

Early treatment can prevent long-term issues.

  • This varies depending on your condition. Acute sciatica may improve in a few sessions, while chronic cases may require ongoing care. Your osteopath at JMK Osteopathy Sheffield will create a clear treatment plan.
