Sciatica is a painful condition caused by irritation or pressure on the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. This nerve runs from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. When compressed, it can lead to:

  • Sharp or burning pain in the lower back, buttock, or leg

  • Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” down the leg

  • Weakness or difficulty moving the affected leg or foot

  • Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing, or bending

Sciatica is an umbrella term for pain running down the back of the leg and is often linked to problems such as a slipped disc, spinal/disc degeneration, muscle tension, or posture issues.

The national institute for health and care excellence (NICE) suggest manual therapy (spinal manipulation, mobilisation or soft tissue techniques such as massage) for managing low back pain with or without sciatica.

Osteopathy takes a gentle, whole-body approach to treating sciatica. Treatment may include:

  • Relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve

  • Improving movement in the spine and pelvis

  • Releasing tight muscles in the lower back and hips

  • Supporting better posture to reduce strain on the spine

  • Providing advice on exercises and lifestyle changes to prevent flare-ups

Osteopathy doesn’t just target the symptoms, it helps address the underlying cause, supporting recovery and reducing the risk of sciatica returning.

If sciatica is stopping you from moving comfortably, book an appointment today to find out how osteopathy can help relieve your pain and restore mobility.
